Reading Session
Story Dogs is based on the successful American literacy program, Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.). The R.E.A.D program was launched in 1999 in Utah, USA, as the first comprehensive literacy program built around the appealing idea of children and young adolescents reading to dogs.
Reading sessions take place in a quiet area of the school grounds, such as the library or outside the classroom. A reading session is approximately 20 minutes long, where each child is one-on-one with the dog team. Books are chosen to suit the student´s reading level. During the session, the handler often speaks through the dog, such as; “Sam doesn't understand what is happening on this page, could you help him out?” The child becomes the teacher as they help the dog understand, and their confidence soars.
Our volunteers come with fun, interesting books that are specifically chosen for beginner readers. The students also have input into what they read. We encourage the students to write letters to the dogs between reading sessions, further encouraging literacy skills.

We change lives!
'Zell'
My son was crying and upset to go back to school today...then he spotted his Story Dog, 'Zell' and he ran into the classroom!
'Stumpy'
One of 'Stumpy’s' students from last year is in a school newsletter at the start of this year for a Pupil of the Week Award for being a responsible reader. This from a child who couldn’t read, and didn’t want to read, when they began the Story Dogs program with 'Stumpy'.
'Polly'
My son read to 'Polly' last year and looked forward to Wednesday’s every week. He is so much more confident now because of Robyn and 'Polly'. Even though he is too old for the program this year, he mentions at least once a week how much he misses 'Polly'. He even shed a few tears knowing that she won’t be attending the school anymore Thank you so much Robyn and 'Polly', you have changed my son’s life for the better.

We change lives!
Story Dogs has been a game-changer for many of our most disadvantaged students at Gillwinga Public School. We have a high number of students with ADHD, ASD and trauma and we have found that ‘Rusty’ has not only broken barriers in terms of reading instruction for many of our kids, but has also been instrumental in helping them learn to regulate their emotional responses and provide joy in their lives. You can see their faces light up when he enters the school gate, and the students are always begging to read with ‘Rusty’.
We can't thank Kathy and Story Dogs enough for what they bring to our school.
John Galea,
Learning Support Teacher.
This student absolutely loves her time with ‘Kuro’.
She didn't want to try reading the first few sessions - she said she didn't know the words. By Week 4, she was repeating some words after me. We've just had our 8th session and she read an entire story all by herself!
It was the most amazing change to have seen! She was so excited and proud of herself. I let her borrow the book because she wanted to show her mum that "I really can read!”

Students have enjoyed the program with some writing and/or drawing notes for the volunteer. In one case in an unrelated class activity, a student asked to give their Health work to the volunteer as they were particularly proud of it and wanted to share it with her. The volunteer wrote a return thank you message and the student was so excited, wanting to take it home to share with his family. One student with sensory challenges, took a number of weeks to be able to greet, touch and pat the dog. By the end of the term, he was co-leading the dog to and from each session, along with helping to set up in the morning as well as reading and patting the dog during the session.

Graeme Base says:
Story Dogs is very lucky to have the support of an internationally acclaimed Australian children's author and illustrator in Graeme Base. Here is what he said about Story Dogs.
"It was at an outdoor book festival that I first came across Story Dogs. Squeezed between the crowded book marquees was a little tent in which sat three gorgeous dogs, happily accepting the adoration of all who came across them.
Curious (and also wanting to pat them) I began chatting with the handler. It turned out they were specially chosen for their patient temperaments to sit with children with reading difficulties and listen to them read.
What a stunning idea!
Literacy is crucial to every child’s future, and those who fall behind when they are young inevitably struggle to catch up. What better way to break down the barriers that build up in such a child‘s mind than by sharing and explaining a book with a dog who needs a little help with some of the words…?
I am delighted to add my name in support of this inspired initiative - for the path to a happy and rewarding life is generously paved in well-read, dog-eared books!
Hooray for Story Dogs (woof!)"
