Pats Not Hugs
Ensuring Our Story Dogs Feel Safe and Happy

At Story Dogs, the well-being of our canine companions is at the heart of everything we do. Our dogs play a crucial role in fostering a love of reading and learning among students, and ensuring they are happy and stress-free is essential for a successful program. One of the key ways we achieve this is through our policy of "Pats Not Hugs."
Why "Pats Not Hugs"?
Dogs are incredibly affectionate animals, but they can experience stress and discomfort from physical interactions that might seem harmless to us. While a hug is a common gesture of affection among people, it’s not always the best way to show love to a dog. Here’s why "Pats Not Hugs" is important for our Story Dogs:
- Respecting Canine Comfort Zones: Unlike humans, dogs don’t naturally enjoy being embraced. Hugs can make dogs feel trapped and anxious, as they restrict their movement and invade their personal space. By focusing on gentle pats and strokes, we allow our dogs to feel in control and comfortable.
- Reducing Stress: Stress is a significant concern for dogs in any setting. Physical contact that they perceive as overwhelming can lead to increased stress levels. Our "Pats Not Hugs" policy helps in reducing this stress, ensuring that our dogs remain calm and happy.
- Promoting Positive Interactions: Positive reinforcement is key to our program’s success. When students and staff interact with dogs using gentle pats, it reinforces the dogs' positive experiences with humans, making them more eager to engage and participate in the reading sessions.
- Ensuring Safety: A happy and stress-free dog is a safe dog. When dogs are comfortable with their interactions, they are less likely to display defensive behaviors. Our policy helps in preventing unwanted reactions and ensures a safe environment for both dogs and people.
How We Implement "Pats Not Hugs"
To ensure that our Story Dogs are always happy and stress-free, we have established clear guidelines for interactions:
- Guidance for Students: We educate students on the importance of gentle interactions with our dogs. They learn to approach the dogs calmly and to use soft pats instead of hugs.
- Staff Training: Our staff members are trained to model the correct way to interact with the dogs. They are also responsible for reinforcing these practices among students.
- Ongoing Monitoring: We continuously monitor our dogs’ responses to interactions and adjust our guidelines as needed to ensure their comfort and safety.
