NAPLAN results show that thousands of Year 3 students are falling behind at the very moment when literacy matters most. When words stop making sense, confidence begins to fade — and that feeling can last a lifetime.

But when a child sits beside a calm, friendly Story Dog, something beautiful happens.

The Story of 'Rosie'

This is a story about Jayon…..the little boy that could.

Jayon is a Year 2 student that wanted nothing to do with reading! He found it overwhelming and struggled to stay focused which meant he was disinterested in his school work….until he met 'Rosie'! 'Rosie' and I began our Story Dog journey at Northshore Christian Grammar School in Term 2 this year. When Jayon first came to read with us, I noticed a few things about his reading. For example, he would guess the words and become distracted very easily. He was unable to hold the book still which would obviously make it difficult for him to read and he would lose interest very quickly which meant I would have to read to him. So I came up with a plan. I decided that I would hold the book instead and point to each word and helped him to sound the words out instead of guessing. To keep him focused and still, I asked him to pat/massage 'Rosie’s' back which helped keep his hands busy. 'Rosie' certainly didn’t mind a bit! Using these methods, Jayon’s reading improved every week! He developed a beautiful bond with 'Rosie' and she would show him so much love and affection! She knew that he needed her and it was lovely to watch them together. As the weeks went by, Jayon’s enthusiasm for reading became stronger. He FINALLY loved reading! He told me he would even read to his own dog at home! His wonderful teacher also kept me up to date with his progress in class. It was wonderful to hear that not only had his reading improved dramatically but his writing, focus and behaviour has also improved! By the end of the last term of school, he had climbed 9….yes 9 reading levels!! Each week I was astounded at how much he had improved and how he would absolutely nail those big words which was once very scary! If that wasn’t amazing in itself, I was then informed that he would be receiving the Growth Award at the end of year Awards Assembly! I was fortunate to be able to witness the wonderful moment Jayon was presented with his award and was extremely proud that the Story Dogs program was given some credit to his achievement, alongside the hard work and patience from his teachers and of course Jayon’s determination and perseverance! It was an emotional and proud moment for his lovely family as well who were very grateful to 'Rosie' and I!

These success stories are the reason programs such as Story Dogs are so important! ALL of my students looked forward to 'Rosie' and I visiting every week and their little smiles and day so much brighter! Knowing that my beautiful 'Rosie' and I can have such a huge impact on their future makes it all worthwhile! We will miss our time with Jayon, however we couldn’t be prouder! We will always remember him as, ‘the little boy that could’…...and he did!

While we humans enjoy our chocolate eggs and hot cross buns, it’s important to remember that many traditional Easter goodies can be harmful to dogs. But don’t worry! We’ve got you covered with some pawsome, dog-friendly Easter treats you can make at home. ��

Why Regular Easter Treats Are Dangerous for Dogs ��

Before we dive into the recipes,

let’s talk about what not to give your pup this Easter:

Chocolate �� – Contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs.

Hot Cross Buns �� – Often contain raisins and sultanas, which can cause kidney failure.

Xylitol (Artificial Sweetener) �� – Found in some sugar-free sweets and peanut butters, highly toxic to dogs.

Fatty or Spicy Foods ��️ – Can lead to pancreatitis and digestive issues.

By doing so, we ensure that both the children and the dogs have a positive and enjoyable experience.

Additionally, our Story Dog teams serve as great role models, demonstrating how to interact with dogs in a gentle and respectful manner. By observing and participating in these interactions, children gain practical experience in ‘speaking dog’ and respecting canine boundaries.

Final Thoughts

Consent-based touch is an essential aspect of caring for dogs, promoting trust, reducing stress, and preventing aggressive behaviours. Teaching children how to ‘speak dog’ and perform consent check-ins with their pets not only makes them safer around dogs but also nurtures their ability to empathise with animals.

At Story Dogs, we believe in fostering these respectful relationships to create a better experience for all involved—kids, dogs, and their communities. The 2024 NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) results have once again underscored the critical need for additional reading support among Australian students, particularly those in Year 3. These assessments provide valuable insights into the literacy and numeracy skills of students across the country, and this year's data reveals a concerning trend: a significant number of young learners are struggling with reading and are at risk of falling behind.

The NAPLAN 2024 Reading Results: A Closer Look

NAPLAN categorizes student performance into four main areas:

Exceeding: Students in this category surpass expectations, demonstrating advanced skills.
Strong: These students meet challenging yet reasonable expectations, showing a solid grasp of the material.
Developing: Students in this group are progressing but have not yet met the expected standards. They are on their way but require continued guidance.
Needs Additional Support: This critical category highlights students who are not achieving the expected learning outcomes and are likely to need extra help to keep pace with their peers.

The 2024 NAPLAN results show that over 34,000 Year 3 students fall into the "Needs Additional Support" category for reading. This figure represents a significant portion of the student population and highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions.

Here's a breakdown of the Year 3 reading results by state:

These figures paint a stark picture of the challenges faced by Year 3 students across Australia. In some states, the percentage of students needing additional support is alarmingly high. For instance, in the Northern Territory, over 35% of students require extra help with reading, while Queensland and Western Australia also have significant proportions of students in need.

How Story Dogs is Making a Difference

At Story Dogs, we are committed to addressing this pressing issue by providing targeted reading support to children who need it most. Our program currently helps close to 3,000 students each week, offering a unique and effective approach to improving literacy skills. However, with over 34,000 students identified as needing additional support, we are only reaching 8% of the children who could benefit from our services.

Our method is simple but powerful: we pair trained, gentle dogs with students who are struggling with reading. These canine companions provide a non-judgmental and comforting presence, allowing children to read aloud without the fear of making mistakes. This positive and encouraging environment helps build their confidence, improve their reading skills, and develop a lifelong love of learning.

The Growing Need for Support

The 2024 NAPLAN results highlight the increasing demand for programs like Story Dogs. With such a large number of students falling into the "Needs Additional Support" category, it's clear that more resources and interventions are needed to prevent these children from falling further behind.

The situation is particularly urgent in states like Queensland, where 14.1% of Year 3 students require additional help, and the Northern Territory, where the figure rises to a staggering 35.2%. These students are at a critical juncture in their education, and without the right support, they risk being left behind in their academic journey.

Successful grant recipients for 2024

In 2024, 28 regional community groups from around Australia will benefit from a share of $2 million.

We're beyond thrilled to share that Story Dogs has been named a successful grant recipient of the prestigious Qantas Regional Grants program for 2024!

Since taking off from outback Queensland in 1920, Qantas has been a cornerstone in driving local economic activity and supporting jobs across Australia’s regional communities. Their commitment to these communities, recognized as the heart and spirit of Australia, shines brightly through their Regional Grants program, now in its third incredible year.

In 2024, 28 regional community groups from all over Australia will benefit from a share of $2 million, and we are honored to be among them. Since the program’s inception in 2019, Qantas has supported over 80 not-for-profit groups and projects across regional Australia, distributing an astounding $5 million in grants.

From a pool of more than 1,700 applications, Story Dogs was chosen to receive a tailored combination of cash, free flights, and marketing support to help us continue our mission. This generous grant will significantly enhance our efforts to foster literacy and a love of reading among children in regional communities.

Understanding the Unique Bond Between Humans and Dogs

Dogs have been our loyal companions for thousands of years, and their ability to understand and respond to human emotions has fascinated researchers and pet owners alike. But how much can our furry friends really perceive? Can they read our minds? Let's delve into the remarkable bond between humans and dogs and explore the science behind their seemingly intuitive behaviour.

The Canine-Human Connection

From the moment you wake up to the time you go to bed, your dog is likely by your side, observing your every move. Dogs are incredibly attuned to human behaviour and can pick up on subtle cues that indicate our emotions and intentions. This heightened sensitivity is a result of their evolutionary history and domestication, which has made them highly perceptive to human signals.

Body Language and Facial Expressions

Dogs are experts at reading body language and facial expressions. Studies have shown that dogs can distinguish between happy, sad, and angry faces, and they often mirror our emotions. For example, if you’re feeling anxious or stressed, your dog might become more alert and attentive. Conversely, if you’re relaxed and happy, your dog is likely to mirror that calm demeanour.

Tone of Voice and Vocal Cues

The way we speak to our dogs also plays a significant role in how they understand us. Dogs can differentiate between different tones of voice and respond accordingly. Research has shown that dogs can detect changes in human body chemistry associated with different emotions. For instance, they can smell the adrenaline released when we’re scared or anxious, and this helps them respond appropriately to our emotional state.

Empathy and Emotional Support

Many dog owners report that their pets seem to know when they’re feeling down and will come to offer comfort. This behaviour is not just a coincidence; dogs are capable of empathizing with their owners. Their keen sense of observation and ability to pick up on emotional cues enable them to provide emotional support when it’s needed most. This empathy is one of the reasons dogs make such effective therapy animals.

Training and Strengthening the Bond

While dogs have a natural ability to read our minds, training can enhance this bond further. Positive reinforcement training helps dogs understand and respond to our commands, improving communication and strengthening the relationship. In the wake of the schools shootings in Florida , therapy dogs have been used as a way to provide comfort and support for students returning to school. Research has shown therapy dogs can reduce stress and provide a sense of connection in difficult situations.

Given the impact therapy dogs can have on student well-being, schools and universities are increasingly adopting therapy dog programs as an inexpensive way of providing social and emotional support for students.

What are therapy dogs?

It’s important to note therapy dogs are not service dogs. A service dog is an assistance dog that focuses on its owner to the exclusion of all else. Service dogs are trained to provide specific support for individuals with disabilities such as visual or hearing difficulties, seizure disorders, mobility challenges, and/or diabetes.

The role of therapy dogs is to react and respond to people and their environment, under the guidance and direction of their owner. For example, an individual might be encouraged to gently pat or talk to a dog to teach sensitive touch and help them be calm.

Therapy dogs can also be used as part of animal assisted therapy . This aims to improve a person’s social, cognitive and emotional functioning. A health care professional who uses a therapy dog in treatment may be viewed as less threatening , potentially increasing the connection between the client and professional.

There are also animal-assisted activities , which is an umbrella term covering many different ways animals can be used to help humans. One example is to facilitate emotional or physical mental health and wellbeing through pet therapy or the presence of therapy dogs. These activities aren’t necessarily overseen by a professional, nor are they specific psychological interventions.

Research suggests using therapy dogs in response to traumatic events can help reduce symptoms of depression, post traumatic stress disorder and anxiety.

So, what can happen psychologically for people using therapy dogs?

The human-animal bond

The human-animal bond can impact people and animals in positive ways. Research shows therapy dogs can reduce stress physiologically (cortisol levels) and increase attachment responses that trigger oxytocin – a hormone that increases trust in humans .

Dogs also react positively to animal-assisted activities. In response to the human-animal bond, dogs produce oxytocin and decrease their cortisol levels when connecting with their owner. Often dogs feel the same when engaging in animal assisted activities as if they were at home, depending on the environmental context.

Benefits of therapy dogs

Animal assisted therapy can:

teach empathy and appropriate interpersonal skills
help individuals develop social skills
be soothing and the presence of animals can more quickly build rapport between the professional and client , and
improve individual’s skills to pick up social cues imperative to human relationships. Professionals can process that information and use it to help clients see how their behaviour affects others .

More recently, therapy dogs are being used as a form of engagement with students at school and university.

Benefits of therapy dogs at school

A recent report highlighted children working with therapy dogs experienced increased motivation for learning, resulting in improved outcomes.

Therapy dogs are being used to support children with social and emotional learning needs, which in turn can assist with literacy development .

Research into the effects of therapy dogs in schools is showing a range of benefits including:

increase in school attendance
gains in confidence
decreases in learner anxiety behaviours resulting in improved learning outcomes, such as increases in reading and writing levels
positive changes towards learning and improved motivation , and
enhanced relationships with peers and teachers due to experiencing trust and unconditional love from a therapy dog. This in turn helps students learn how to express their feelings and enter into more trusting relationships.

Despite these known benefits, many schools choose not to have therapy dog programs due to perceived risks . These range from concerns about sanitation issues to the suitability of dog temperament when working with children. But therapy dogs and owners are carefully selected and put through a strict testing regime prior to acceptance into any program .

The main reason for the lack of take up has been linked to the limited research into the benefits of therapy dogs in schools.

Benefits of therapy dogs at university

Researchers have found university students reported significantly less stress and anxiety , and increased happiness and energy, immediately following spending time in a drop-in session with a dog present, when compared to a control group of students who didn’t spend any time with a therapy dog.

Generally, therapy dog programs rely on volunteer organisations. One example is Story Dogs , who currently have 323 volunteer dog teams in 185 schools across NSW, Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, SA, WA, and ACT. In total, they help 1,615 children each week.

Research into these programs is needed to help further understand the impacts of therapy dogs, especially on student learning and academic outcomes. Lack of funding is setting this research back. University partnerships are one solution to address this.

Recently one of the parents of a student who is involved with the Story Dogs program sent us a little note about how the program had helped her son. Here is what she had to say.

“This year my son has been involved with Story Dogs. The time he spent with Sandy & ‘Oscar’ has been a life saver. The first half of the year was extremely difficult for him and the only bright spot he saw in his week was his visit with Sandy & ‘Oscar’. Thursday was the only day I could get him to go without tears and lots of stress.

They are both amazing and really made a difference to him. They helped his anxiety and confidence.

So I just wanted to say thanks for this great program.”

Canberra starts Story Dogs program

“It was a dark and stormy night…” when Story Dogs kicked off in Canberra (September 2017). Canberra’s first Story Dogs Team (Dashi and Robyn) braved rain, sleet and cold to arrive at the Woden Library ready for…stories!

Two young children entertained Dashi the greyhound with stories from both Story Dogs and library books. Both children lacked confidence and had reading difficulties. It was amazing to see how much confidence the children gained reading to Dashi, even during a short first session. It was also rewarding to see the children leave with books to continue their reading adventures and to have the Mums’ acknowledge the value of Story Dogs for increasing their children’s literacy.

Dashi loved engaging with the kids – both listening intently to the stories and then playing.

Libraries ACT are keen to have Story Dogs as a regular part of their children’s program and Story Dogs is eager to see more teams join Dashi and Robyn in bringing the joy of reading to as many children as possible.
